Fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
TRVs let you set each room's temperature separately, so you stop heating rooms nobody is using.
What to do
- List which rooms you use least, such as spare bedrooms.
- Fit TRVs to radiators that don't have them (a heating engineer can do this).
- Set lower numbers in little-used rooms and higher in living areas.
- Leave the radiator in the room with the main thermostat without a TRV, or fully open.

Turn your thermostat down by 1°C
Lowering the room temperature by a single degree reduces how hard your heating works, and most people barely notice the difference.
Set heating timers and schedules
Heating an empty home wastes energy. A schedule makes the heating come on when you need it and go off when you don't.
Consider a heat pump
Air source heat pumps are much more efficient than gas boilers at turning energy into heat, but whether one suits you depends on your home.
Reduce your combi boiler's flow temperature
Combi boilers run in their more efficient condensing mode when the water they send to radiators is cooler.
