Turn your thermostat down by 1°C
Lowering the room temperature by a single degree reduces how hard your heating works, and most people barely notice the difference.
What to do
- Check what your thermostat is set to now.
- Turn it down by 1°C and live with it for a week.
- Aim for around 18–20°C in living areas; keep vulnerable or elderly household members warm enough.
- If the house feels cold, check draughts before turning it back up.

Set heating timers and schedules
Heating an empty home wastes energy. A schedule makes the heating come on when you need it and go off when you don't.
Fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
TRVs let you set each room's temperature separately, so you stop heating rooms nobody is using.
Consider a heat pump
Air source heat pumps are much more efficient than gas boilers at turning energy into heat, but whether one suits you depends on your home.
Reduce your combi boiler's flow temperature
Combi boilers run in their more efficient condensing mode when the water they send to radiators is cooler.
