How the Energy Debt Repayment Calculator Works
The calculator divides your total energy debt by your chosen repayment period to estimate the monthly payment, and spreads the same debt across the equivalent number of weeks (months multiplied by 4.345) to estimate a weekly figure. It shows what equal repayments could look like — not a plan your supplier has agreed.
What To Do If You Cannot Afford Your Energy Debt
If you're worried about energy debt, contact your supplier as early as possible and ask for an affordable repayment plan. Suppliers have a duty to work with customers in difficulty, and getting in touch sooner usually gives you more options.
Can Energy Suppliers Force High Repayments?
Suppliers should take your affordability into account when setting a repayment plan. If a proposed repayment feels unaffordable, check your rights and speak to your supplier, Citizens Advice or refer to Ofgem guidance. You don't have to accept an amount you genuinely cannot afford without raising it.
Prepayment Meter Debt Repayments
Energy debt can sometimes be collected through a prepayment meter, where a portion of each top-up goes towards the debt. Even then, the repayment rate should remain affordable, so it's worth discussing the deduction level with your supplier if it leaves you short.
Why Your Actual Repayment Plan May Be Different
Your real plan can differ from this estimate because of supplier policies, affordability checks, any benefits you receive, vulnerability support, your payment method, your wider household circumstances and the repayment terms you ultimately agree. Treat this as a starting point for a conversation, not a fixed arrangement.
