Corrections policy

PowerGuardian publishes figures that people use to make decisions about their energy bills. When we get something wrong we correct it openly, and we say what changed. We do not quietly alter a published figure or conclusion.

    Report a suspected error

How to report a suspected error

Use our contact form, or the "Report an error on this page" link that appears on our research, index and forecast pages. That link prefills the page title so we know exactly where to look.

    Please include, where you can:

    • The page address and the exact wording or figure you think is wrong
    • What you believe the correct position is
    • A link to the source that supports it, ideally a primary source such as Ofgem, DESNZ, NESO or ONS
    • The date of the data you are comparing against — energy figures change quarterly

You do not need a source to report a problem. If something looks wrong, tell us and we will check it.

    How corrections are assessed

    1. We acknowledge the report and check the figure against the original source document or dataset.
    2. We establish whether the difference is an error, a change in the underlying data since publication, or a difference in definition — for example a direct-debit figure compared against a prepayment one.
    3. We classify the outcome as no change required, a minor correction (typographical or presentational, with no effect on a figure or conclusion), or a material correction (any change to a published figure, ranking or conclusion).
    4. Where we cannot verify a claim either way, we remove or flag the statement rather than defend it.

    How material corrections are displayed

    • A dated correction note is added to the affected page explaining what changed and why.
    • Corrections to a published index figure or ranking are also recorded in our public corrections log, which records the index affected, the original publication date, the correction date, and whether rankings were affected.
    • Where a methodology changes rather than a figure, the change is recorded in the methodology version history.
    • Minor corrections update the review date but do not carry a correction note.

Publication dates, review dates and corrections

These are three different things and we keep them distinct:

    Published
The date the analysis first appeared. This never changes.
    Reviewed / updated
The date we last re-checked the evidence behind the page. We do not advance this date because a page was edited, restyled or re-deployed — only because the underlying data or reasoning was checked again.
    Corrected
The date a specific published figure or conclusion was changed, shown in the correction note on the page.

    Content status

Analytical pages carry a status so you can see how current they are: Current (evidence re-checked and still stands), Under review (we are re-checking it, and it may change), Superseded (a newer report or dataset replaces it, linked from the page) and Archived (kept for its historical record only). Superseded and archived pages are preserved rather than deleted, and always link to the current position.
