How to Read Your UK Energy Bill
Energy bills are intentionally dense. Here's a plain-English guide to the bits that actually matter — and the bits suppliers hope you don't read.
Key sections to find
- Tariff name — tells you if you're on a fixed deal or the default variable cap.
- Unit rate (p/kWh) — what you pay per unit of energy used.
- Standing charge (p/day) — the daily fixed cost.
- MPAN / MPRN — your unique electricity / gas meter numbers.
- Meter reads — actual vs estimated. "E" means estimated.
- Personal projection — supplier's estimate of your annual cost.
- Cheapest tariff message — required by Ofgem; ignore if you've already compared elsewhere.
Red flags to watch for
- Estimated reads for more than 2 cycles → submit a real read now.
- Big credit balance (£200+) → request a refund.
- Direct debit increased without notice → challenge it.
