How the Power Cut Risk Checker Works
The tool takes your postcode and matches it to your local electricity network area, then assesses broad regional characteristics — such as whether the area is rural or urban, how exposed it is to severe weather, and how much of the network is likely to be overhead. It combines these into an indicative regional risk level. It does not use live outage data and cannot predict outages for an individual home.
Who Is My Local Electricity Network Operator?
Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) owns and maintains the cables, substations and power lines that deliver electricity to your home. This is different from your energy supplier — the company you pay your bills to. You can switch supplier freely, but your DNO is fixed by where you live, and it is the DNO you contact during a power cut. The main GB networks are UK Power Networks, National Grid Electricity Distribution, Northern Powergrid, SP Energy Networks, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and Electricity North West.
What Causes Power Cuts In The UK?
Most power cuts come from the network rather than your supplier. Common causes include storms and high winds bringing down overhead lines, trees and branches damaging cables, equipment failures at substations, underground cable faults, planned network maintenance, and vehicle collisions with poles or roadside equipment. Severe weather is the single biggest driver of large, widespread outages.
Are Some Areas More Vulnerable To Power Cuts?
Geography and infrastructure can influence how likely outages are across an area. Rural and remote locations often rely more on overhead lines, which are more exposed to wind, trees and lightning than underground cables. Coastal and upland regions can see more severe weather, while dense urban areas tend to have more underground networks. These are regional tendencies only — they don't determine what will happen at any single property.
What Should You Do During A Power Cut?
Call 105 for free to report the cut and reach your network operator, and check whether neighbours are affected too. Switch off appliances that were on (especially cookers and heaters) but leave one light on so you know when power returns. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed, use a torch rather than candles, and keep warm with extra layers. In a life-threatening emergency, always call 999.
Priority Services Register Explained
The Priority Services Register is a free support service from network operators and energy suppliers for people in vulnerable circumstances — including older residents, people who depend on electrically powered medical equipment, those with disabilities or long-term illness, and households with young children. Registered customers can receive advance notice of planned work, priority updates during outages, and tailored support. You can sign up by contacting your network operator and your supplier directly.
