How the Home Energy Efficiency Score Works

The tool asks about common household efficiency factors — insulation, windows and draughts, your heating system and controls, appliances and lighting, and your everyday energy habits. Each answer is weighted and combined into an indicative score out of 100, with insulation and heating carrying the most weight because they typically have the biggest impact on energy use.

Is This the Same as an EPC Rating?

No. This is not an official Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and does not produce a formal property rating. It's a general, educational guide to help you spot where your home might be losing energy. For an official rating, you'll need an assessment from a qualified domestic energy assessor.

    Why Insulation Matters

A large share of a home's heat can escape through an uninsulated loft and walls. Good insulation slows that heat loss, so your heating doesn't have to work as hard to keep rooms warm — which is why insulation carries the most weight in the score.

Why Windows and Draughts Affect Energy Bills

Single glazing and older windows let more heat escape than modern double or triple glazing, and gaps around doors, windows and floors let cold air in. Sealing draughts is often one of the cheapest ways to make a home feel warmer and reduce wasted heating.

    Heating Systems and Controls

The type and age of your heating system affects how efficiently it turns fuel or electricity into warmth, while good controls — like a smart or programmable thermostat and individual radiator controls — help you heat only the rooms you need, when you need them, reducing waste.

Appliances, Lighting and Everyday Energy Use

Newer, efficient appliances and LED lighting generally use less electricity than older equivalents, and small everyday habits — like monitoring usage and switching things off — add up over time. Together these influence your overall electricity consumption.
