Smart meters and billing problems: the essentials
Start by naming the problem
Billing problems fall into a few recognisable groups: the meter is not communicating so bills are estimated, the meter readings themselves look wrong, the tariff or rates applied are wrong, or the direct debit is out of step with actual consumption. The remedy differs in each case, so identifying which one applies saves a lot of time on the phone.
The in-home display is not the meter
The display unit shows data sent by the meter. If the display is blank or frozen, the meter is usually still recording correctly — that is a communication or display fault, not a metering error. A genuine metering fault shows up as readings that do not match manual meter readings taken at the meter itself.
Evidence to keep
Take a dated photograph of the meter reading, keep the bills either side of the disputed period, note the dates and names from any calls, and keep written responses. If a complaint has to be escalated, that record is what the case rests on.
Complaint route and escalation
Raise the issue with your supplier first and ask for it to be logged as a formal complaint. If it is not resolved, or eight weeks pass, the Energy Ombudsman can consider the case free of charge and its decision binds the supplier. Citizens Advice runs the consumer helpline for energy and can help before that point. PowerGuardian publishes guidance only — we are not a regulated legal or financial adviser and we cannot act on your behalf.
If you are struggling or at risk of disconnection
Contact your supplier immediately and ask about affordable payment plans and the Priority Services Register. Suppliers must not disconnect a household that is engaging about payment, and additional protections apply to vulnerable customers. Citizens Advice can advise independently and free of charge.
