    Working with PowerGuardian

PowerGuardian is an independent UK service that monitors household energy prices and publishes original analysis of what households pay. We are happy to provide figures, charts and comment — and we will tell you plainly when we cannot evidence something.

    Who we are

PowerGuardian tracks UK energy prices against the regulator's published cap, assesses supplier practices, and provides calculators that let households check their own costs. Research is led by Peter Flynn, founder & research lead, powerguardian. We are not a price comparison site and we do not sell energy contracts.

    Published research

Every release states its source, formulas and limitations, and includes the attribution wording to use. See the research methodology.

    What data we hold

So you know what we can and cannot support. Sources marked as not publishable are excluded from comment.

    • Ofgem price cap — canonical record — Publishable now
    • Ofgem price cap — change log — No qualifying records yet
    • Supplier performance scores — Held, not yet verified
    • Calculator and tool results — No qualifying records yet
    • My PowerGuardian household profiles — Sample too small to publish
    • Energy journey progress — Sample too small to publish
    • Search demand for PowerGuardian pages — Held, not yet verified
    • Briefing subscribers — Sample too small to publish

    What we can comment on

    • How the Ofgem price cap is built, and what its unit rates and standing charges mean for a household bill.
    • The fixed daily cost element of a bill, and how it affects lower-using households differently.
    • How supplier practices — billing, direct debits, estimated readings — affect what households pay.
    • How to check whether a direct debit or an energy quotation is reasonable.
    • Our own published research, including its limitations.

What we will not comment on

    • What PowerGuardian users pay, unless a release has been published from a consenting, sufficiently large sample.
    • Forecasts of future cap levels presented as predictions rather than clearly labelled scenarios.
    • Any figure about an individual household, supplier customer or region we cannot evidence with a dated source.
    • Market-share, complaint or performance claims about a named supplier without dated evidence for that specific claim.

    Our standards

    • No figure is published without its source, period, formula and limitations.
    • Research using data from people who use PowerGuardian requires their active opt-in, is aggregated, and needs at least 30 records per published figure.
    • No household is ever identified, and no full postcode is ever published.
    • We do not describe our own sample as representative of UK households, because it is not.
    • Errors are corrected, dated and listed in the corrections log.
